APICDA is committed to fostering workforce development opportunities through its many internship and educational offerings. Designed to support recipients of the Emil Berikoff, Sr. Memorial Scholarship (EBMS), community members seeking to explore new professional avenues, and local youth interested in gaining employment experience, APICDA's internship program serves as a bridge towards education, employment, and community engagement. Several internships have resulted in full-time employment opportunities at APICDA and with partnering organizations.

Three types of internships are available within APICDA, its subsidiaries, partnerships and other organizations affiliated with APICDA member communities: Akutan; Atka; False Pass; Nelson Lagoon; Nikolski; St. George; Unalaska. For more information about each type of internship, visit our website.

The Gear Reimbursement Grant (GRG) aids residents of APICDA CDQ member communities who participate in commercial fisheries and/or subsistence harvesting activities. The goal of the program is to assist residents in obtaining new and efficient gear to maximize their harvest efforts by providing financial assistance in the form of reimbursement for a portion of the incurred costs. APICDA will reimburse 50% of the total qualified purchase(s) for commercial fishing and subsistence gear expenses. Residents may amend their application throughout the application period to meet the commercial fishing and/or subsistence grant maximums.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Resident of Akutan, Atka, False Pass, Nelson Lagoon, Nikolski, or St. George
  • Age 18 or older and physically able to participate in subsistence and/or commercial fisheries
  • Submit a complete application with all required items during the application period (March 1 - December 1)

The Justine Gundersen Leadership Development Grant is available to APICDA community residents who seek funding to attend or engage in leadership development opportunities. Leadership development comes in many different forms. This grant provides funding to participate in conferences, summits and trainings or to work with and shadow a leader. These are all excellent ways to learn about being a leader in your community and what it takes to grow in that capacity. APICDA is proud to support emerging community leaders, not only with this grant, but in a partnership to identify customized leadership development pathways for applicants.

What does the grant cover?

This grant will support expenses such as, cost of travel from your APICDA community to the training location, applicable fees, allowable hotel and meals. Applicants are expected to seek funding from other supporters for their leadership development. 

Eligibility Requirements

  1. Resident of Akutan, Atka, False Pass, Nelson Lagoon, Nikolski, St. George or Unalaska.
  2. Minimum 14 years of age.
  3. Demonstrate a financial need and show that other sources of funding support have been pursued.
  4. Submit a complete application form with required attachments within 10 business days of the travel start date.

This program is named in honor of the late Emil Berikoff, Sr. of Unalaska, who served on the APICDA Board for 15 years before passing away in 2011. His contributions as a trusted board member and to the region were invaluable.

The purpose of the Emil Berikoff, Sr. Memorial Scholarship (EBMS) program is to provide scholarship awards to current APICDA community residents and former residents who demonstrate a tie to one of the following APICDA communities: Akutan; Atka; False Pass; Nelson Lagoon; Nikolski; St. George; Unalaska.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Resident of an APICDA community OR a former resident with a tie to an APICDA community
  • Enrolling at an accredited college or university
  • Enrolling in a minimum of 6 credits per semester or 4 credits per quarter
  • Maintain a minimum 2.0 GPA for each term funded
  • Demonstrate financial need
  • Submit a complete application by 5:00 p.m. AKST on one of the published deadlines below:
  1. July 1 - School year (fall through spring terms, does not include summer term)
  2. November 15 - Winter and/or spring term(s) ONLY
  3. April 1 - Summer term ONLY

  • Two letters of recommendation - New Applicants Only

The Career and Technical Training (CTT) Scholarship provides vocational training and career development scholarships to or for the benefit of APICDA residents. This scholarship aids residents of the APICDA region in their educational pursuits, supporting them to undertake vocational training or professional development to advance their careers. APICDA utilizes this fund to strengthen economic growth crucial for sustaining our communities. Scholarship funds can be used to cover the following expenses: registration, tuition, fees, books, transportation, or other reasonable educational expenses.

The CTT Scholarship is available to residents of Akutan, Atka, False Pass, Nelson Lagoon, Nikolski, St. George, and Unalaska.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Be a current resident with intent to remain indefinitely, or a former resident currently employed by a local regional entity whose training will directly benefit the region, or a past resident whose training will assist them in securing a job in an APICDA community.
  • Minimum age 18
  • Provide proof of enrollment in a vocational training program or career development program.
  • Submit an application no later than 10 business days prior to the payment due date.

APICDA recognizes the interconnectedness of students, families and communities within the Aleutian-Pribilof region. We believe that expanding access to education and training offerings beyond CDQ member communities will help increase opportunities for networking, collaboration and information sharing, and in turn will help grow and strengthen our regional economy.

The Haginaa Kidul (Helping to Grow) Vocational Training Scholarship program is a competitive scholarship program for individuals pursuing vocational training or professional development to advance their careers. To qualify, must be a current resident of one of the following communities: Adak, Akutan, Atka, Cold Bay, False Pass, King Cove, Nelson Lagoon, Nikolski, Sand Point, St. George, or Unalaska.  

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Meet the residency requirement (above) and demonstrate intent to remain a resident indefinitely.
  • Training goals must relate to employment opportunities in the Aleutian-Pribilof region.
  • Minimum age 18
  • Provide proof of enrollment in a vocational training program or career development program.
  • Submit an application no later than 30 days prior to the training start date.

The Career and Technical Training (CTT) Scholarship provides vocational training and career development scholarships to or for the benefit of APICDA residents. Employers are eligible to apply for the CTT Scholarship on behalf of their employees to support the training needs of their organization. APICDA utilizes this fund to strengthen economic growth crucial for sustaining our communities.

Eligibility Requirements

  • The CTT Scholarship is available to employers with their primary place of business operations is conducted in one of the APICDA communities (Akutan, Atka, False Pass, Nelson Lagoon, Nikolski, St. George, and Unalaska) and their employees meet the eligibility requirements below:
  • Employee(s) must be a current resident in one of the above communities with intent to remain indefinitely, OR a former resident currently employed by a local employer whose training will directly benefit the region, OR a past resident whose training will assist them in securing a job in an APICDA community.
  • Scholarship funds can be used to cover the following expenses: registration, tuition, fees, books, supplies/tools, ground transportation, airfare, or meals.
  • Minimum age 18
  • Submit an application no later than 10 business days prior to the payment due date.
