APICDA is committed to fostering workforce development opportunities through its many internship and educational offerings. Designed to support recipients of the Emil Berikoff, Sr. Memorial Scholarship (EBMS), community members seeking to explore new professional avenues, and local youth interested in gaining employment experience, APICDA's internship program serves as a bridge towards education, employment, and community engagement. Several internships have resulted in full-time employment opportunities at APICDA and with partnering organizations.

Three types of internships are available within APICDA, its subsidiaries, partnerships and other organizations affiliated with APICDA member communities: Akutan; Atka; False Pass; Nelson Lagoon; Nikolski; St. George; Unalaska. For more information about each type of internship, visit our website.

The Justine Gundersen Leadership Development Grant is available to APICDA community residents who seek funding to attend or engage in leadership development opportunities. Leadership development comes in many different forms. This grant provides funding to participate in conferences, summits and trainings or to work with and shadow a leader. These are all excellent ways to learn about being a leader in your community and what it takes to grow in that capacity. APICDA is proud to support emerging community leaders, not only with this grant, but in a partnership to identify customized leadership development pathways for applicants.

What does the grant cover?

This grant will support expenses such as, cost of travel from your APICDA community to the training location, applicable fees, allowable hotel and meals. Applicants are expected to seek funding from other supporters for their leadership development. 

Eligibility Requirements

  1. Resident of Akutan, Atka, False Pass, Nelson Lagoon, Nikolski, St. George or Unalaska.
  2. Minimum 14 years of age.
  3. Demonstrate a financial need and show that other sources of funding support have been pursued.
  4. Submit a complete application form with required attachments within 10 business days of the travel start date.

The Career and Technical Training (CTT) Scholarship provides vocational training and career development scholarships to or for the benefit of APICDA residents. This scholarship aids residents of the APICDA region in their educational pursuits, supporting them to undertake vocational training or professional development to advance their careers. APICDA utilizes this fund to strengthen economic growth crucial for sustaining our communities. Scholarship funds can be used to cover the following expenses: registration, tuition, fees, books, transportation, or other reasonable educational expenses.

The CTT Scholarship is available to residents of Akutan, Atka, False Pass, Nelson Lagoon, Nikolski, St. George, and Unalaska.

Eligibility Requirements

  • Be a current resident with intent to remain indefinitely, or a former resident currently employed by a local regional entity whose training will directly benefit the region, or a past resident whose training will assist them in securing a job in an APICDA community.
  • Minimum age 18
  • Provide proof of enrollment in a vocational training program or career development program.
  • Submit an application no later than 10 business days prior to the payment due date.

APICDA recognizes the interconnectedness of students, families and communities within the Aleutian-Pribilof region. We believe that expanding access to education and training offerings beyond CDQ member communities will help increase opportunities for networking, collaboration and information sharing, and in turn will help grow and strengthen our regional economy.

The Haginaa Kidul (Helping to Grow) Vocational Training Scholarship program is a competitive scholarship program for individuals pursuing vocational training or professional development to advance their careers. To qualify, must be a current resident of one of the following communities: Adak, Akutan, Atka, Cold Bay, False Pass, King Cove, Nelson Lagoon, Nikolski, Sand Point, St. George, or Unalaska.  

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Meet the residency requirement (above) and demonstrate intent to remain a resident indefinitely.
  • Training goals must relate to employment opportunities in the Aleutian-Pribilof region.
  • Minimum age 18
  • Provide proof of enrollment in a vocational training program or career development program.
  • Submit an application no later than 30 days prior to the training start date.
